Legendary Kee Baseball Coach Schultz Announces Retirement
8/20/2014 - A legend among Iowa's high school baseball coaches is putting away his lineup cards. According to a news release from the Iowa High School Athletic Association, Kee High School head coach Gene Schultz tendered his resignation yesterday, ending a 45-year run with the KeeHawks. His Iowa record of 1,578 wins during the summer season is far and away a national high school record. 176 wins during 11 fall and spring seasons pushes his final mark in the Iowa record books to 1,754-398.
As part of his 45-year tenure at Kee, the KeeHawks have won nine state titles, a record that remained unmatched until Daveport Assumption won their ninth championship earlier this month. Schultz led Kee High to 19 summer state tournaments and 16 state championship games, both career bests in the state of Iowa. Schultz also coached Kee's basketball team, falling just short of 400 victories in that sport.
