The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams will play their final doubleheader of the season when they host Waverly-Shell Rock in non-conference action Tuesday.
It’ll be a ranked boys matchup between the #9 (2A) Falcons (18-1) and #6 (3A) Go-Hawks (14-5), the first meeting in the Bound era. The Falcons have won 11 straight and Waverly-Shell Rock has won nine straight. Head Coach Aaron Thomas looks forward to ending the regular season with some unfamiliar competition.
“If we can get 20 wins in the regular season, it’d be a heck of an accomplishment,” Thomas says. “Waverly-Shell Rock is an extremely good team. I watched their film with Union as we were preparing for Union. And they’re gonna be a handful. It’ll be a great test for us. It’ll maybe expose some things that we need to improve upon. And we know we’re gonna have to come out and be extremely intense and match their physicality. And they’ve got some guys who can really score it. But to play two teams we know we won’t see in the postseason being in 3A, and probably a little more physical teams than we’ve seen. I think that’ll be good for us as we prepare and get ourselves ready for postseason play.”
In the girls game, AP (14-6) will look to extend a two-game win streak, having defeated Union 52-32 Friday. But the #9 (4A) Go-Hawks (17-2) will provide a stiff test, having won five straight, including a 51-38 win over #9 (2A) Denver last week.
The doubleheader will start at 6:15 p.m.
