Grundy Center senior Tiernan Vokes was recently named the NICL-West Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He shared the honor with Drew Eilers of Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
Head Coach Brent Thoren says Vokes’ versatility is a big reason he earned the honor.
“Tiernan is really a versatile player,” Thoren says. “When Jalen went down, it forced him to kind of expand his game a little bit. And he really took off then once he was kind of forced to be a little bit more involved. And also truth be told, there was some rust that we had with our football guys too. And Tiernan was one of those guys that it just took us a little while to kind of get ourselves back into basketball condition. And to wear off the soreness of football season and that type of thing. So, a tremendously hard worker. He’s been a young man that’s done everything we’ve ever asked of him. He’s willing to sacrifice for the team, and just a great all around basketball player that we have on our team. We’ve got a lot of them, but he’s right at the top of the list there with our guys that really know how to turn it on when the lights are the brightest.”
He was fourth in the division in scoring at 13.4 points per game. He’s second in the league with 129 made field goals and recorded the fifth-most steals in the division with 39.
The 6-seed Spartans will take on 3-seed Unity Christian in a Class 2A quarterfinal Tuesday on 99 The Wave.
