Iowa Falls man charged with theft and forgery

A 30-year-old Iowa Falls man was arrested Wednesday and was charged with first degree theft, a class “C” felony, and with forgery, a class “D” felony.

Michael William Watts owns Watt’s Accounting.  At the end of last month, the Empress Boat Club’s Board of Trustees reported the theft of funds from the organization’s checking account, as 11 checks totaling 16-thousand-500 dollars were written to Watt’s Accounting with forged signatures.

Also, at the end of last month, the Empress Board of Trustees reported the theft of 32-thousand-400 dollars from their checking account.  25 different checks were written to Watt’s Accounting.

Authorities allege Michael Watts forged signatures on all 36 checks for a total of 48-thousand-900 dollars.  Watts has been released from custody, and has a preliminary court hearing set for March 21st.  If convicted on both charges, he could be sentenced for up to 15 years in prison.
