The Grundy Center boys basketball team has had its season come to a close in Tuesday’s Class 2A quarterfinal round. While it wasn’t the end that the class of seven seniors was hoping for, Head Coach Brent Thoren says a remarkable legacy was created.
“You step back and you see what it took to get here and what they did,” Thoren says. “I think that’s part of their legacy, how they just handled themselves and just what it took to get here, from the work ethic to the sacrifices by the families to kind of everything in between. I like to think that they inspired a lot of people and a younger generation to get down here as well. And our JV was really good this year, they were undefeated. So hopefully there’s some guys on there that got a taste of it down here, and then next year it’s their turn.”
The senior class led the program to two consecutive state tournaments after a 20-year drought. During the last two seasons, the team went 42-7. The class included Jalen Kirkpatrick, Preston Martens, Dayton Myers, Ryker Thoren, Tiernan Vokes, Brayden Wallis and Brody Zinkula. It was the program’s 10th all-time state tournament appearance.
