The #6 (1A) Dike-New Hartford girls soccer team was strong in all phases of a 4-1 win over previously undefeated Colfax-Mingo Monday, as aired on 99 The Wave.

Gentry Swarts got the scoring underway with 25 minutes left in the first half. Just before halftime, the Tigerhawks got what proved to be their only score, and it was tied 1-1 at halftime. Using stifling defense, the Wolverines limited Meadow Lane, who entered the game as Iowa’s leading goal scorer, and the rest of the Tigerhawk attack. Ruby Varney scored once and Lucy Varney scored twice within the final 20 minutes to seal the win.

“We started really strong, we were able to find our feet, we were able to find good possessions,” Head Coach Emma Eden says. “They had a really good opportunity. We left her and she had a beautiful shot. Nothing we could do there on that for our goalkeeper, but they came out ready to go and we were with them there. We just kind of got a little bit lax on our defense, and can’t do that. But yeah, I think second half we turned a page. We were ready to go. We were ready to put all the stops in and I think our girls just kind of put all their grit into it. They were aggressive, they wanted to dominate the field on winning those 50-50 balls and I think it showed with our possession there.”

The Wolverines (5-2) will return to action Thursday at GC-GR in a rematch of a season-opening 4-0 win.
