Happy Earth Day 2025 to my fellow earthlings. I had an interesting conversation yesterday with the head of the Franklin County Tree Board, Randy. Back in the day, there was no environmental regulations, people littered, companies dumped waste with no regard and our air, water and soil quality was severely lacking. After the moon landing, environmental protection garnered more attention. After stepping on a pop tab, Senator Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nation wide teach-in April 22, 1970. “Earth Day” was coined and the United Auto Workers became the first financial supporters of the movement. Over the years, more regulations have been proposed and some passed to help with clean air, and water acts, not only in the United States, but world wide. Which can been seen in photos dating back before the regulations. City views obscured by smog, bodies of water void of life, and soil minerals, and nutrients depleted if not totally devoid. So, this Earth day I encourage everyone to do one thing good for the earth. Maybe its picking up litter while on a walk, planting a tree or wild flowers, or just enjoying a moment in nature. Hopefully those will be things you do more often than just once a year, and can become a healthy habit of the future. Air, water and soil quality matters not only for us humans, but for the future.
