The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls track & field team placed fifth in Class A at Tuesday’s Cardinal Girls Relays at Garner Hayfield Ventura. Medalists:
MacKenzy Valley – 1st in 3000
Charlee Morton – 1st in discus
Charlee Morton – 1st in shot put
Lily Hambly – 3rd in high jump
Sprint medley – 3rd

Morton’s shot put throw of 46-09.25 set a new program and meet record, and is now the leading mark in Iowa heading into the Drake Relays.
She’ll look to make it three straight Drake Relays titles in both the discus and shot put. She says she has a few ways to build confidence and gain distance with each throw.

“As a routine now, I kind of roll around in my neck and it’s kind of a little bit of a superstition,” Morton says. “If I don’t get it in the right spot, I know I’m not going to have a good throw. But once I do get in a good spot, I have that confidence. Kind of the same thing for discus, going long left and just attacking it and finishing it all the way through. Those are the things I’ve been working on, and hopefully I can do those little things once I get to Drake and State.”

The Drake Relays girls discus event will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m., and the shot put will be Friday at 9:00 a.m.

The boys tennis team won 7-2 at home against Webster City. Jerry Flores won a 10-0 sweep at #4 singles, and none of the wins were closer than four games. At 2-4, they’ll return to action Thursday by hosting Osage.

The girls tennis team fell 9-0 at Webster City. At 0-8, their next meet will be Monday at South Hardin.

The girls golf team placed second with 227 strokes at a triangular at St. Edmond, where Algona was the champion.

The boys golf team placed third in a triangular at Algona with 202 strokes. The hosts were the champions and St. Edmond was second. Both golf teams will be back in action Friday, with the girls at home and the boys at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
