Franklin County uses the Alert Iowa system to help get information out to residents in times of emergencies including severe thunderstorms.

Franklin County Emergency Management Coordinator Joel McWilliams tells RadioOnTheGo News how people can sign up for the service.

“There’s several ways people can sign up. They can text Franklin IA to 77295. They can visit FranklinCountyIA.gov or they can also download the Smart 911 app on their smart devices. It’s customizable depending how you sign up. If you download the app or if you visit the website, you can select what alerts that you would like to receive. If you don’t want to receive flash flood alerts, you don’t have to receive flash flood alert. They are also location specific. So if you’re in Hampton, or you’re in Latimer and one or the other is not supposed to get the storm, you won’t receive the notification because it’s not expected to affect you.”
