The #8 (2A) AP/DNH boys soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie at home against #4 (1A) Hudson Tuesday, as aired on 99 The Wave.
In a defensive battle, the Pirates got on the board with 10 minutes left in the first half and led for most of the game. The teams traded several shots on goal, but strong goalkeeper performances and tight defense prevented nearly each opportunity. With 3:53 left in the game, United senior Ty Luhring connected on the team’s only goal.
Luhring says the team built momentum late.
“We could have gone further because I think we could have gotten them, but it was a great game considering the situations,” Luhring says. “We’re missing two of our key players tonight due to dual sports. So I don’t know. For the situations, I think we did great. And I think if we had the right ones, then we could have pulled off the win if there’s no ties this year.”
Head Coach Perry Bernard feels they avenged a 2-1 loss from earlier in the season.
“The ties are all new for this season, but honestly in this game that tie kind of feels like a win,” Bernard says. “Hudson beat us earlier in the season. We were hoping to tie that one too, but it just didn’t work out. Obviously you want to take a win, but a tie in this case again against a team as good as Hudson, I’ll take that.”
Goalkeeper Adrian Huisman recorded six saves. AP/DNH will be at Columbus Catholic Wednesday at 4:15.
The #14 (1A) Falcon girls soccer team fell 2-0 at #6 (1A) Hudson. After a scoreless first half, Hudson added both goals in the second half to pull away. AP will host Columbus Catholic Wednesday at 3:30.
The #10 (1A) girls tennis team was tested, and fell 8-1 at #3 (1A) Decorah. Peyton Klooster won 6-0, 6-3 at #2 singles for the only win, moving her to 10-0 on the season. They’ll return to action Wednesday at Columbus Catholic at 2:00 p.m., joining the AP boys, who will start at the same time.
The boys golf team finished with 156 strokes to win a triangular at Fox Ridge Golf Course. Dike-New Hartford was second with 164 and South Hardin had 174. Caleb Campbell tied for first with 36 strokes. They’ll be back in action Thursday at Hudson.
