The Hampton-Dumont-CAL tennis teams will compete at the North Central Conference tournaments Wednesday. They’ll both start at 10:00 a.m., with the girls at Webster City and the boys at St. Edmond.
The boys golf team is looking to surge as the postseason nears. Head Coach Trevor Eiklenborg says seniors Sean Heilskov and Charlie Showalter can be counted on to consistently deliver the best scores.
“Charlie and Sean have been consistently towards the top of our lineups, and they’ve done everything that I’ve been saying,” Eiklenborg says. “They have a short term memory on the golf course. If they do have a bad hole or a bad shot, they don’t let it affect the next one. They forget about it and they move on. I think they tackle every hole with the idea of how can I par this? And then if they do get into trouble, get into the trees, they don’t try to play hero ball. They punch out and try and save par, and if not, their mind shifts to how can I bogey this. My seniors are also very good at that idea of not thinking too much, because it’s all mental, if you think too much, it’s going to be very difficult.”
Eiklenborg says the team needs to eliminate holes that finish well over par to contend among the best in the area in upcoming meets.
“We’re going to see lots of good teams. I don’t expect them to go out and shoot 30 strokes better than we have all year, but I do want us to get a new best. Our best is 183. Let’s get a little better at Briggs Woods on Thursday. And then the only thing that matters is how you’re playing going into conference and sectionals. So hopefully we’re hot at that point, and we’ll see what happens.”
Their next meet is Thursday, a tournament at Webster City.
