This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, a week-long celebration in the United States dedicated to honoring and acknowledging the hard work and dedication of teachers.
Celebrated during the first full week of May, teacher appreciation dates back to the 1950s when, then former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, persuaded Congress to proclaim a national teacher day. A study by the National Education Association shows that the average workweek for teachers is 53 hours.
Beth Frenchick, the Principal at Hampton-Dumont’s North Side and South Side elementary schools, says Teacher Appreciation Week gives her another chance to celebrate educators in the district.
“I do encourage if you have a student in school wherever they are, make sure you’re telling those teachers what you appreciate about them and thanking them for the love that they share for your student. And here at North and South Side, we have the most amazing teachers at Hampton-Dumont. They care deeply for our kids and it gives us a chance this week to celebrate everything that they do. They come in early in the morning, leave late in the evening, dedicate so much of themselves to their students. And so we just, want to celebrate them each and every day, but this is a special week just for them.”
