Travelers from Iowa and Nebraska are forecast to travel in near record numbers for this year’s Memorial Day weekend. AAA forecasts more than 3.7 million people from the West North Central Region (includes Nebraska and Iowa) will travel 50 miles or more. That’s 116,000 more holiday travelers than 2024, but 71,000 less than the overall travel record for the region which was set in 2005.

Nationwide, AAA expects more than 45.1 million to travel for Memorial Day weekend. That’s 1.4 million more domestic travelers than last year. It’s also a new Memorial Day weekend record, surpassing the previous record set back in 2005 with 44 million people.

The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26. The five-day holiday length is consistent with previous holiday periods dating back to 2000.
