Cougars, Broncos, Spartans advance as teams to girls golf regional finals

Three local teams and three local individuals advanced to next week’s girls golf regional finals with strong performances at Friday’s regional first round meets.

At 2A Region 3A hosted by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at Clarmond Country Club, Grundy Center was the champion with 371 strokes, well ahead of East Sac County’s 408. Individually, all four scoring members of the Spartans placed in the top five. Leah Larson was the medalist at 86, Avery Knutsen was second at 92, Reagan Pekarek was fourth with 96 and Kahlynn Draper was fifth at 97 strokes. They’ve advanced to the Region 3 Final at South Hardin. The hosts placed sixth with 465 and Iowa Falls-Alden was seventh with 470.

At 1A Region 3A hosted by South Hamilton at Jewell Golf and Country Club, Belmond-Klemme placed second with 407 strokes. The scoring golfers were each in the top 15. Taylor McVey was fourth with 99, Adasyn Lamb tied for fifth at 100, Ryleigh Eckhoff was eighth at 102 and Quinn Gabrielson was 15th at 106. West Fork’s Emersyn Brown tied for fifth with 100 strokes to advance individually. They’ve advanced to the Region 3 final at Newman Catholic.

In 1A Region 3C hosted by Columbus Catholic at South Hills Golf Course, AGWSR placed second with 418 strokes to advance as a team. Gabrielle Kruger placed sixth with 99 strokes, Aniya Vogel was seventh at 100, Claire Meyer was 11th at 105 and Jaelyn Graham was 20th at 114. They’ll compete at the regional final at Newman Catholic.

At 1A Region 3B at Saint Ansgar, North Butler’s Zoey Thompson tied for second with 92 strokes to advance individually to the Newman Catholic regional final. The Bearcats were third with 425 strokes and Clarksville didn’t have a team score.

In 2A Region 3B at Oelwein, South Hardin’s Emma Topp placed third with 90 strokes to individually advance to the South Hardin regional final. The Tigers placed fourth with 424 strokes.

The regional finals will be Wednesday, May 21.
