
Local boys tennis teams had their seasons come to a close during Saturday’s first two rounds of 1A Substate 4 action.
In Decorah, Aplington-Parkersburg began the day with a 5-1 win over Clear Lake. The Falcons got two-set wins in all but #1 singles, and avoided moving to doubles play.
Simultaneously, the hosts defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL 5-0. Andyn White won a game in set 1 at #1 singles, and the other five singles matches finished in sweeps before White’s second set could be completed.
In the semifinal, Decorah beat the Falcons 5-1. The lone win was by Tyler Wedeking at #2 singles, winning 12-10 in a tiebreaking third set.
In Waterloo, Iowa Falls-Alden fell to Columbus Catholic 5-0 in the first round. Keaton Mulford and Tristan Kappel each won a game in their second set, but the rest of the matches were sweeps by the Sailors.
Grundy Center defeated Osage 5-0. At #1 singles, Carson Laube was tied 6-6 with his opponent when the rest of the singles matches were completed to clinch the dual.
In the semifinal, the Sailors beat the Spartans 5-3. Each team won three singles matches, with Grundy Center getting wins by Elias Cakerice at #2, Kael Edwards at #4 and Dayton Myers at #6. The Sailors won #1 and #2 doubles to clinch the dual and advance to the substate final.
