After 40 years of service in education, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Activities Director Jeff Meyer announced his plans to retire, and the decision was approved by the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows school board at a meeting earlier this year.
Meyer on his decision, his successor and final month in the role.
“It’s just time to go. I’m still enjoying teaching. I’m still enjoying the kids and the people I work with. It’s just time for me to step aside, look for new adventures and where I want to be in life,” says Meyer. “Brad Kahler is taking my spot and I just want to try to leave things in good shape for him so that he can move it forward as he sees fit. Change is coming, but he’ll do a good job with it. I’m looking forward to watching some baseball and softball this summer and quietly fading off into the sunset.”
Meyer has served as a teacher for seven years and AD for three years at CGD, before that he taught three years at Meskwaki Settlement School, 28 years at Northeast Hamilton and two years at Eagle Grove. Meyer currently is a math instructor at CGD.
Meyer on a rewarding part of his job and the support over the years.
“It’s been great. The kids throughout the years have always been great and they’re fun to work with. All the athletes but not only that, the parents you meet, the officials you meet, the coaches and athletic directors from other schools that you work with when you go there. It’s just getting to know a lot of people. There’s so many events and so many teachers and community members that say, what do you need? They step up and they help. I just want to thank them all. They are so helpful. They don’t know the ease that makes in my job making these events happen.”
Meyer in addition to his AD responsibilities, also filled in as the public address announcer at many athletic and other school activities.
Meyer on some of his favorite CGD athletic events and what he is looking forward to in retirement.
“Part of me being activities director, I love sports. It’s all great. We’ve gone to the Field of Dreams, gone to Principal Park. We played basketball down at Wells Fargo. Wrestling at the well or down in Coralville. Then state track at the Blue Oval. It’s all fun. All my kids are married and being able to go visit with them and spend some more time with them. Their are two of them that are close enough to travel to meet with and stuff. Looking forward to some more family time and my wife and I taking a vacation or two.”
Meyer will retire effective June 30th.
