Tuesday about 2:40pm the Iowa State Patrol was called out on the report of a multi-vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near mile marker 147 in northern Hamilton County, or around the interchange with county road D-20.

According to the accident report, a 2019 Ford Fiesta driven by 68-year-old Reed Peterson of Mason City, was traveling northbound on the interstate when he crossed the median and hit the rear trailer tires of a semi-truck.  After the impact, Peterson was struck by another semi-truck, dislodging the engine from the Ford Fiesta.

A 4th vehicle, a 2016 GMC Yukon, driven by 23-year-old Caleb Jacobsen of Dows, was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 when his vehicle struck the engine block and the 2nd semi.  Both vehicles ended up in the west ditch.

The 1st semi stopped on the shoulder, while Peterson’s vehicle stopped on the inside lane.  Peterson died from injuries sustained in the accident, while all others involved were treated and released.
