The Aplington-Parkersburg girls soccer team was effective in all phases of Wednesday’s 1A Region 8 quarterfinal 4-0 win over Clear Lake, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.

Continuous pressure applied by the Falcons allowed them to get many shots on goal in the first half, including Adri Allan connecting for the game’s first goal less than eight minutes in. But strong goalkeeping by Clear Lake prevented any further damage, and it was 1-0 at halftime. Allan helped increase the lead with another goal in the second half.

Ciara Troyna added a second half goal, and Shelby Arkulari connected on a corner kick assist as part of a three-goal second half which put the game away. Head Coach Cory Goetsch says they left no doubt in the second half.

“I thought the girls really came out in that second half and looked really good,” Goetsch says. “We had a lot of opportunities in the first half. We just weren’t able to convert those. We knew going into the game, we scouted them pretty hard that they had a really talented goalkeeper with a lot of height and she was going to be a little bit of trouble for us. But we were able to find the back of the net a few more times and get it taken care of in that second half.”

AP has advanced to a regional semifinal at #10 (1A) Dike-New Hartford on Wednesday, May 28.
