ISU Extension reporting problems with some soybean stands

Iowa State Extension and Outreach is reporting some issues with soybean stands in the local area.

One issue was high winds, which hit on May 15th, 16th, and the 19th, and physically assaulted emerged plants, in this case, both corn and soybeans.  Blowing soil and residue cut off plants that were newly emerged, thinning populations.

In other situations, people have complained about very slow emerging soybeans from the planting window of May 7th-11th.

While even soybean emergence is not as critical to yield as even corn emergence, this is going to require stand assessments to determine what is going on.

There are many reasons why these stands are emerging erratically, but generally speaking this alone does not always warrant replanting or thickening up a stand.
