West Fork Boys Golf Will Compete at 1A State Tournament

The West Fork boys golf team will tee off at the IHSAA Class 1A State Golf two-day tournament on Tuesday at South Hills golf course in Waterloo.

The Warhawks qualified for state with a third place score of 340 strokes at 1A district tournament at Highland Park golf course in Mason City on May 19.

Head Coach Chris Noss on management of districts by golfers and level of state competition.

“I told the boys at the start of the round that whoever outlasts the weather is going to win. We just happened to by two strokes over Starmont. They played good, a couple bad holes for every golfer but overall, they did a good job,” says Noss. “It’s going to be tough competition. I know there’s kids that are averaging under par. I’m happy that all six of my boys contributed all year. They’re excited to get down there and prove something.”

Top rounds played at districts were by Levi Staudt with a 77 finishing runner-up and Nolan Shreckengost with an 81 placing fourth.

Noss on a strength of the Warhawks and finishing on the green.

“Usually it’s our short game that gets us over the top. That’s what we preach, if you can get up and down from 100 yards out, you’re going to score good on any course. Three putts, absolutely no three putts. If we can get by with no three putts down at state, that’s going to help our score tremendously. That’s the big thing right now.”

Tee off is at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and action will continue into Wednesday.
