The #9 (2A) AP/DNH soccer team was crisp in all phases in Tuesday’s 7-1 home win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL in a 2A Substate 2 semifinal, as aired on 99 The Wave.
The United had a hot start, with Aiden Merrill scoring less than eight minutes in to set the tone.
It was the first of three first half goals by the United, and they added four in the second half to cruise to the win. Merrill and Kellen Reints each scored twice. Antuan Deering, Preston Janssen and Levi Folkerts added the others.
“00:00
We’ve just been practicing for this team and how they play the last week,” Senior Jackson Mulder says. “It’s great to get a good win like this under our belt going into the next round because Hampton-Dumont-CAL is definitely a good team. And to get a win like this is a good confidence builder.”
Head Coach Perry Bernard says it was a great game to prepare for Webster City.
“We kind of came into this game more thinking about Webster City than Hampton, but we knew Hampton played a lot like Webster City,” Bernard says. “So we kind of did a little different set, kind of worked on that, played a little heavier back, have our mids doing a little more work front to back. And it seems to really work out and it helps too when we have everybody back and healthy too.”
The United will play at #7 (2A) Webster City in Thursday’s substate final on 99 The Wave.
Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s lone goal came in the second half by Fernando Mota.
“It’s unfortunate, it’s not what we thought was gonna happen tonight,” Hampton-Dumont-CAL coach Danielle Arana says. “Win or loss, we at least thought it was gonna be close. So the loss itself is one thing, but then the the amount of goals that they scored was just a little disappointing. However, we played hard and they continued to play hard and they continued to play, and were still fighting to score at the end when it’s seven to one and there’s five minutes left and that goal is not going to make a difference, And the fact that they just kept playing their hardest the entire time was nice to see.”
The Bulldogs have had their season end at 10-4-3.
