For the first time in history, the Aplington-Parkersburg girls soccer team has defeated Dike-New Hartford. The Falcons earned a 2-1 overtime road victory over the #10 (1A) Wolverines in Wednesday’s 1A Region 8 semifinal, advancing the team to a regional final.
In an intense, closely contested battle, the teams had relatively even possession time throughout, though the Wolverines registered several more shots on goal. Ciara Troyna hit a long bouncing shot to put the Falcons on the board in the first half, and it was 1-0 at halftime. Early in the second half, Ruby Varney connected on DNH’s goal to even the score. Goalkeepers Jaden Zedeker of DNH and Emma Haan of AP each recorded several saves on quality shots, but neither team scored through the rest of regulation. With 8:34 left in the overtime, Addison Hook found an opening.
The Falcons will play at #9 (2A) Center Point-Urbana in Friday’s regional final on 99 The Wave.
DNH has had its season close at 11-6-1.
