For the second consecutive season, the #9 (2A) AP/DNH soccer team has finished one game shy of a state tournament appearance. They fell 4-0 at #7 (2A) Webster City in Thursday’s 2A Substate 2 Final, as aired on 99 The Wave.

The Lynx found the scoreboard 28 minutes into the game and held a 1-0 halftime lead. The United struggled to find open teammates through the stifling Webster City defense, and were held to very few shots on goal. The Lynx connected on a penalty kick as part of a second half where they scored three goals, advancing them to a third consecutive state tournament appearance. Head Coach Perry Bernard says the team put itself in the best position it possibly could, a much different story than when the teams met in the regular season.

“We came in as a different team, different setup than the first time,” Bernard says. “We had all of our players back. We started out really, really well. I think we did everything we could do against this team. Obviously, they’re the better team, so they came out on top. And congratulations to them. And I hope they have best luck at state. I told the boys, we all told the boys that they did everything they possibly could. They left it out on the field. So I’m very proud of them.”

The season has ended at 11-4-1.
