Members of the “Revitalize Dumont” nonprofit organization announced the school building in Dumont was vandalized earlier this week.
In a Facebook post Thursday, the group stated the incident happened “on the evening of Memorial Day, between 8:30 and 9:00 and more damages were done to the building.”
Roger Kregel, President of “Revitalize Dumont,” tells RadioOnTheGo News neighbors of the school reported the incident after seeing three young individuals enter the building that night.
“Police were called and by the time they got there, evidently nobody was around. So we didn’t get really good identifications at that time, but evidently they went in, they’d use some chairs and other things to break a bunch of the glass windows in the offices and the entryway, took a whole bunch of fluorescent light bulbs out of the classrooms and broke them up. Took a bunch of them down to the gymnasium and broke the light bulbs, fluorescent light bulbs all over the gymnasium floor tipped over a bunch of our lockers. just some broke glass trophy cases in the entryway of the gym. So no paint or anything like that, but just broken glass and stuff that we got to clean up again.”
Kregel says it’s a small setback to a large community project.
“This isn’t going to stop our mission, so we’ll take a step back, but we’ll keep plugging forward and make this all happen yet. It’s going to be good. It’s more right now about less cleanup and more about we’re in fundraising mode now. We got to get a roof on the building, is item number one, and get some electricity in the building. So it’s more about the fundraising and getting some funds so we can start doing some of these larger things that need to be done to the facility.”
