The Aplington-Parkersburg girls soccer team put up a valiant battle, but fell 2-0 at #9 (1A) Center Point-Urbana in Friday’s 1A Region 8 Final, as aired on 99 The Wave.
The Stormin Pointers got on the board within the game’s first four minutes and added another later in the first half for a 2-0 halftime lead. The Falcons registered several shots on goal, but they all were missed by narrow margins. In a ramped up defensive intensity, the Falcons held CPU scoreless in the second half, due in part to strong goalkeeping by Emma Haan. However, the Stormin Pointer defense held strong and advanced to the Class 1A state tournament. Head Coach Cory Goetsch says they were in contention the entire game.

“We definitely had some chances, especially in that first half, and they were like near misses from my distance,” Goetsch says. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. I thought the second half, the girls really stepped it up. I think every one of the girls on the team just emptied their tank and gave everything they had to try to get something going. We’re using our wing going down Adri’s side and seeing those crosses coming in. And I think, we were just missing them by toes or feet or something. It just needed to redirect the other way. And I think they would have ended up in the back of the net. I couldn’t see from my angle, but it sure looked like they were just at the mark.”

The season has ended at 10-7-2.
