The Hampton-Dumont-CAL baseball team is nearing an opportunity to play on a historic field. They’ll take on West Marshall at the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville Tuesday, which will air on 104.9 KLMJ.
“It’s gonna be great experience,” Head Coach Matt Lokenvitz says. “We get to go and play on the actual field, not the one that they built for the major leagues to come and play on. We saw another team play there last year. So we called them up and said, hey, how do you get something like that to happen? They gave us the number to call. We called them up. They said, yeah, you just pick a date and try to find a team that wants to do that. It’s going be something really cool for them, for both teams to really kind of just go out and really get into history and understand, baseball has been around for a long time and it’s been really, really popular and really, really important for the state of Iowa. And this is just one of those landmarks that’s going to be cool to be on.”
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back from an 0-7 start. Carson Helmke has been a bright spot offensively with the team lead in hits and batting average. They’ll look to lock down defensively after giving up 10 or more runs in four games so far. They’ll go for their first win of the season when they host Humboldt for a North Central Conference doubleheader Monday at 5:00 p.m.
One of the winningest programs of the century, West Marshall has stumbled to a 3-5 start to the season. Before they head to the Field of Dreams, they’ll host South Hamilton in a Heart of Iowa Conference game Monday.
Tuesday’s game will start at 5:00 p.m. with pregame coverage at 4:45.
