The Grundy Center softball team scored in each inning on their way to a 14-4, four-inning win over Aplington-Parkersburg Tuesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. The Spartan baseball team beat the Falcons 14-4 in five innings.
The Falcons took the lead in the top of the first inning on a Jordan Trueblood RBI, followed by Ada Switzer scoring on a wild pitch. The Spartans responded with two in the bottom of the inning, including two runs scored when Lauren Zajac reached on an error. Two more scored in the second inning on a passed ball for a 6-2 lead. AP responded when Sophia Junker singled to drive in a run and a steal of home by Avery Freund, but got no more. After adding another in the third, an Evelyn Geerdes triple drove in two runs in the fourth inning, highlighting a seven-run inning to end the game.
“They jumped out on us early and we settled down a little bit, came out in the bottom half of that first inning and got four runs there and got got the lead back,” Grundy Center coach Andy Lebo says. “The girls played well, we had a tough game last night with Dike-New Hartford and lost that in the top of the seventh and you always worry about the next day showing up, and the girls came out, showed up and did a nice job.”
Camdyn Aronson led with two hits and two RBIs. Of the 14 runs, only six were batted in.
AP coach Travis Walker says some mistakes allowed the opponent to take advantage.
“I was pleased with offense and pitching honestly,” Walker says. “The story of our season so far has been the defense. Obviously we’ve got some young kids that are kind of inexperienced and we’re just making some physical and mental mistakes that we just have to continue to work forward and improve upon.”
Trueblood led with two hits and an RBI.
In the baseball game, the Falcons led 4-2 in the third inning, but the Spartans came alive offensively with three runs each in the third and fourth, and six in the fifth to end it early.
Grundy Center will be at Union Wednesday and Aplington-Parkersburg will host Oelwein Wednesday.
