A group of about 20 people in Belmond are helping raise funds for a new pool.
Lee Ann Waltzing is a member of the citizen’s committee in Belmond and tells RadioOnTheGo News the city closed the Luick Memorial Swimming Pool after the 2023 season and it has not been open since due to a leaking problem and other deteriorating conditions at the pool. Waltzing says as a way to inform the public about pool repairs and fundraising efforts, they will hold an informational meeting Tuesday.
“There’ll be engineers there, as well as city staff and some council members and then the pool committee. And we’ll be there to answer any questions people have.”
That meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Leinbach Center. Total cost for the project, which includes the demolition of the current pool, is approximately $5.7 million. The committee has raised roughly $2.2 million as of this week.
Residents in Belmond will vote on a bond referendum in November that, if passed, would use up to $3 million to help fund the project. The city is considering a proposal that would use local options sales tax funds to cover the bond, meaning taxes would not increase in Belmond. More information on the project can be found on the Luick Memorial Swimming Pool Facebook page.
