The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams each won at Union Thursday. The baseball team won 7-0 and the softball team won 11-1 in four innings.
In the baseball game, the Falcons scored in the first three innings, and were shut out in the last four. They scored two in the first, four in the second and one in the third. Sully Janssen had a single and a home run to total five RBIs. Preston Janssen had three hits. It completed a five-game week for the Falcons, which will return to action Monday at Dike-New Hartford for an NICL-Central doubleheader.
In the softball game, Eva Walker hit a triple and scored in the first inning, followed in the next inning by four more runs for a 5-1 lead. Six runs followed in the third inning to complete the scoring, highlighted by Ada Switzer driving in three runs. The Falcons held the Knights off the board in the fourth inning to win by the run margin rule.
They’ll return to action Friday by hosting Belmond-Klemme on 99 The Wave. Head Coach Travis Walker hopes the team continues to make progress.
“We’ll probably run the same varsity lineup out there, we feel like that’s probably our strongest defense,” Walker says. “But again, it’s just going to be a matter of kids just learning by experience. That’s just kind of where we’re at with our program and our numbers. So we’re just going to have to throw kids in there. And we’re going to kind of learn the hard way in a lot of situations. But ultimately, just want the kids to improve and have a good experience.”
Pregame coverage will start at 4:45 p.m., followed by the first pitch at 5:00.
