The West Fork baseball team with a big night for the bats scored an 18-0 win in four innings at Clarksville on Thursday. The win ended a three game losing streak for the Warhawks.
West Fork led 1-0 after the first inning and the offense took flight from there. The Warhawks drove in four runs in the second, five in the third and eight runs in fourth to end the game early through 11 hits and five Clarksville errors. The Warhawks committed one error and didn’t allow Clarksville to collect a hit. Three different Warhawk hitters drove in three or more runs including Brett Behr with four, Trevor Despenas with three and Ashyr Wiseman with three.
West Fork senior Ashyr Wiseman on his approach at the plate and the spark a win like this can provide.
“You gotta be locked in no matter what. The other team can always make a mistake and if you’re not paying attention then you could falter. If you’re always locked in, pay attention, then you’re gonna capitalize on that,” says Wiseman. “That’s what we need. We need to keep rolling and keep winning games. This was a good start to the second half of season. We gotta keep going, as we face all these other conference teams for the second time. It’s always nice to not have to travel so far. It doesn’t matter where we go. We’re gonna show up and play baseball the way we’re supposed to play baseball.”
Zander Hansen for the Warhawks worked four shutout innings with seven strikeouts in the win.
Clarksville Head Coach Pacen Hendricks on adjustments to drive in runs and local non-conference matchups.
“We’d like to improve our approaches, that’s what we’ve been really harping to them. We are still getting used to some of our younger guys getting caught up to varsity speed. Being aggressive and attacking early in the count,” says Hendricks. “It’s important, we don’t get to see teams out of the Top of Iowa a whole lot. When we do crossover, it is important to put out a good outing, and tonight just wasn’t that. We like to crossover and try to compete.”
West Fork (5-6) will host Nashua-Plainfield in Top of Iowa East play on Friday. Clarksville (1-8) will host GMG in Iowa Star Conference action on Friday.
