The AGWSR and South Hardin summer sports teams were each involved in sweeps in doubleheaders in Eldora Monday. The hosts won the baseball games 3-1 and 5-1. AGWSR won the softball games 8-1 and 13-1 in four innings.
The Cougar softball team snapped a seven-game losing streak and defeated South Hardin for the first time since 2020. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard says limiting free bases by the opponent will go a long way toward further success.
“We’re giving up a ton of free bases on errors, and not throwing the ball to where we need to go with the ball,” Holmgaard says. “We’re throwing the ball home and we don’t have a shot at that girl. And then they’re advancing to second base. So now they’ve got another runner in scoring position, base hit, bang. Now we just gave up two runs instead of just having one run scored. So things like that, we really need to concentrate on. And just communicating to the outfielders where the ball needs to go from the infield, just stuff like that. We’ve cut the walks way down, which is awesome, from last year. Last year we had a ton of walks and this year it’s been, I would say we cut it more than half off. So that’s a good start to that.”
AGWSR will return to action Tuesday by hosting Colo-Nesco at 5:00. South Hardin will host South Hamilton at 7:00 Tuesday.
In the baseball doubleheader, the Tigers used steady run production throughout both games, while holding the opponent to one run in each. It extended their win streak to 10 games. South Hardin will host South Hamilton Tuesday at 6:00. AGWSR will return to action Wednesday at Ankeny Christian.
