The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams hosted Columbus Catholic for NICL-Central action Thursday. The baseball team swept a doubleheader 13-3 in six innings and 8-4. The softball team fell 13-1 in four innings in the completion of a suspended game, 15-5 in four innings in the first game of a doubleheader, and 30-15 in Game 2.
In the first baseball game, the Falcons scored three each in the first and second innings for a hot start, and added four in the sixth to end the game early via the run margin rule. Sully Janssen had three hits and three RBIs to lead offensively while pitching the complete game with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Leading 5-0 after the fourth inning of the second game, the Falcons surrendered four runs over the next two innings. They tacked on two more in the seventh to put it away. They were playing as the away team due to the game being originally scheduled as a home game for the Sailors. Preston Janssen pitched the complete game and finished three pitches shy of the maximum of 110.
The Falcons entered the suspended softball game with a 10-0 deficit in the second inning. Jordan Trueblood hit a solo homer in the fourth to put the Falcons on the board before the game ended.
They played as the away team in Game 2 and took a 2-0 lead, but the Sailors scored the next six, followed by seven in the third to create an insurmountable lead. Avery Freund and Sophia Junker each had an RBI.
In a wild final game, the Falcons rallied twice from would-be run margin rule deficits to extend the game to the seventh inning, where the Sailors scored nine to finish a high-scoring night.
Both teams will return to action Wednesday at East Marshall.
