The Grundy Center softball team clinched its first conference championship since 1989 when it swept AGWSR Monday, earning the NICL-West title. Head Coach Andy Lebo on accomplishing the feat.
“Whether it’s the West, Central or East, it’s just a tough conference,” Lebo says. “We always talk about if we can survive here and be successful here, the chance of going out and be able to be competitive outside is really, really, really good. To go down to East Marshall and get a win down there and beat them twice. They were a state tournament team last year returning a lot of kids. We’re excited to be able to, play first of all in this conference, but to come out on top, it was great. But you know, this year we’ve got a lot of experience back and we’re still a really, really young ball club. But we’re starting to put some things together here and I feel like we’re in a pretty good position come postseason.”
In winning the league title, the Spartans have led the division in batting average at .367, including four players batting over .400. Eighth grader Macey Kiewiet leads at .444, followed by Camdyn Aronson at .435, Maddy Hendershot at .432 and Kyndra Dieken at .426.
In their current win streak, they’ve given up just four runs to opponents, including three shutouts. They defeated Hudson 4-3 Tuesday to increase the streak to five straight.
They’ll return to action Wednesday by hosting Denver at 5:00.
