AGWSR Softball eyeing surge as postseason nears

The AGWSR softball team is in a long break between games, having last played Tuesday and not having a game scheduled until Saturday when they travel to Dunkerton. It’s giving the team valuable practice time to prepare for the final week of games before postseason play starts. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard says some key contributors, including sophomore Kami Willems and senior Trevyn Smith, have provided a needed offensive boost throughout the last several games.

“Kami Willems, who was not on my radar to be a contributor on varsity this year, she just all of a sudden started hitting the ball really well on the JV level,” Holmgaard says. “So I said, well, let’s give her a look and see what she can do. And over in Conrad on last Friday, she had a base hit right away on the varsity and got going. And she’s done a really good job of hitting the ball hard, putting it in play. Trevyn’s always been a great leader. She’s hitting right around .500 this year. You’re not going to find a girl that hits the ball much harder than she does consistently. So them and then Brylea Metzgar and Claire Culver pitching have done a really nice job as far as getting in there and throwing strikes. We aren’t striking a ton of people out, but we’re keeping the ball down. We’re getting the ground balls we need to get and then the pop flies we need to get. There’s quite a few girls that have stepped up this year.”

Smith’s .461 batting average is the third-best in the NICL-West, and her 17 stolen bases ranks second.

They’ll look to snap a four-game losing streak at Saturday’s tournament at Dunkerton, which will start at 9:00 a.m.
