MTV: Music Television, first aired on August 1, 1981 with The Buggles “Video Killed the Radio Star”  The station played music videos 24/7 with introductions by the newly coined VJ’s(Video Jockeys).  Soon they added more original programming like MTV News, the Real World, Bevis & Butthead and more.  Since it devolved into more reality shows, than music. Now you would be hard pressed to find any music videos played on MTV across their 3 other stations, MTV2, MTV Live, and MTV Classic.  I was incredibly surprised when I read MTV was returning to form by playing music videos 24/7 across all their channels.  But with a catch.  It’s only for the 7 days leading up to the Music Video awards airing on CBS September 7th.  Past VMA winners and channel personalities will curate their own top 7 music videos from the channels past 44 years.

I thought I would create my own top 7 music video list for fun.  I grew up in the 1990’s when music videos were at their peak and often sat and watched MTV and VH1 non stop. I would even record my favorites on to VHS to rewatch whenever I wanted.  You may notice a bit of a theme with my favorite videos.  I tend to favor psychedelic and surreal imagery, and stop motion animation.  Plus, Michael Jackson was known to do THE MOST for his videos, so of course he’s on the list more than once.
