Bearcats and Warhawks Softball Will Compete at G-H-V Classic on Saturday

The #8 (2A) West Fork and North Butler softball teams will continue postseason tune up as they take the field at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Classic on Saturday. This will be the Bearcats third tournament and the Warhawks second tournament of the season.

West Fork (12-4) won 11-0 in five innings over Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Tuesday and are scheduled to host Saint Ansgar on Friday.

Head Coach Sadie Winfrey on making the most of game action to improve.

“I truly think that their best practice is a live ball game,” says Winfrey. “We have to learn from these live situations and not necessarily just that extra practice time that we’re putting in, that isn’t so live feeling.”

Entering Friday, Libby Trewin has provided a spark in the circle with a 1.41 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 16 games. The power swinging duo of Trewin and Brooke Rother leads the team with 23 RBI apiece.

North Butler (11-9) won 13-4 over Northwood-Kensett on Monday and fell 6-2 to Newman Catholic on Thursday.

Head Coach Austin Guerrero on focusing on the controllables.

“Those weather delays, postponements and cancellations are going to happen. That’s out of their control. I’m just pleased with our girls for focusing on every pitch, every play. You can only control where you’re at. We talk about that breaking down from the offensive side of the ball,” says Guerrero. “You can’t worry about defense, until you put runs on the board when you’re up to the bat. The same thing vice versa on the defensive side. You can’t worry about how we’re going to hit the ball, when you are out in the defensive field. We just got to focus on that pitch, that play.”

Kamri Groen for the Bearcats has been locked in with 118 strikeouts and 1.47 ERA in 18 games. The Bearcats have received balanced run production with four different batters with 10 or more RBI led by Mackenzie Shultz with 12 RBI.

Also in attendance will be #8 (1A) Newman Catholic and Denver.

Action on Saturday begins at 10:00 am in Garner.
