The Hampton-Dumont-CAL summer sports teams will host non-conference games against Grundy Center Tuesday. The baseball game will air on 104.9 KLMJ.
The Bulldog baseball team is coming off a Monday performance where they dropped two games at Webster City, the second of which was the North Central Conference finale. The Lynx won 9-0 in Game 1 and 14-2 in Game 2.
#9 (2A) Grundy Center is coming off Monday’s home sweep of Gladbrook-Reinbeck, where they won Game 1 13-1 in five innings and Game 2 5-4. Brody Zinkula, Ryker Thoren and Pete Lebo each had two hits and the pitching staff gave up just four hits. Tied at 4-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2, Zinkula drove in the winning run in walk-off fashion.
The Spartan softball team will play their first games since Saturday, where they went 0-2 at a tournament at Marshalltown. Head Coach Andy Lebo says the defense, particularly the pitching staff of Macey Kiewiet and Maddy Hendershot, has been a major key to success.
“We’ve kind of limited our walks here as of late,” Lebo says. “We’ve moved the ball around a little bit more and we preach to pitch to contact, and that’s a tribute to our defense. We’ve been able to make some outstanding plays defensively that goes along with that pitching. And that’s been huge for us. I mean, the girls are really stepping up, and this is a year where we finally got a little bit of depth. So we’re able to move some girls in and out and give some people some opportunities. And we’ve had some kids step up, and it’s been great to see.”
The Bulldogs are coming off an 8-4 win at Webster City Monday, where a five-run third inning paved the way for a crucial conference victory. It snapped a six-game losing streak.
The softball game will start at 5:00. The baseball game will start at 7:30, with pregame coverage at 7:15.
