The #2 (1A) Clarksville and #8 (2A) West Fork softball teams each went 1-1 at a late-season postseason preview triangular hosted by the Indians on Wednesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. #11 (2A) Central Springs won 8-1 over Clarksville, West Fork won 4-1 over Central Springs and Clarksville won 4-0 over West Fork.
In the first game, Central Springs took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Clarksville got on the board with a run in the fourth to make it 4-1. The Panthers pulled away with three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh for the win. The Indians were limited on base runners with five hits. It was the first time this season the Indians were held to one run.
In the second game, West Fork took advantage of Central Springs errors, scoring a run each in the third and fourth to go up 2-0. The Panthers got within a run at 2-1 with a two-out rally in the fourth. The Warhawks added some needed insurance with a two run home run to left by JoAnna Wallace with two outs in the seventh to go up 4-1, and closed out the win defensively. Libby Trewin had 11 strikeouts and allowed one run in the complete game. Head Coach Sadie Winfrey on Trewin’s spark in the circle.
“She really continues to do a good job, regardless of if the game is going the way that she wants it to or not,” says Winfrey. “She is a leader and she is the spark that keeps the motivation going. I’m excited to see that the rest of the season. Hopefully it could take us deep into the postseason.”
In the third game, Clarksville plated a run in the first inning and maintained a 1-0 lead through the first four innings. With two outs in the fifth inning, Hannah Wangsness provided some breathing room with a three run shot to left to extend the Indians’ lead to 4-0. The Indians limited the Warhawks’ traffic on the bases over the final two innings to close out the win. Sydney Lovrien had eight strikeouts and allowed only one hit in the complete game shutout. Clarksville junior Hannah Wangsness on her moonshot home run and role at third base.
“I think I was just trying to stay focused. I knew that I needed to get a good hit to drive in the two base runners that were on base. I was just trying to stay focused, keep my weight back and swing hard enough to at least get a line drive to get through the infield,” says Wangsness. “I just try to be a positive leader. I don’t want to get down because if one person gets down, usually the rest of the team will get down. I just try to stay positive, even if I make a mistake, it’s fine, I’ll move on to the next pitch. I try to get through it and keep everyone positive. Tough games, I think now we’re even more ready for postseason and I think it really pumped us up for it.”
West Fork (18-5) will travel to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Thursday. Clarksville (23-4) will play at AGWSR on Thursday.
