The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball team will compete against Eagle Grove as part of a doubleheader at Garner Hayfield Ventura in Class 2A District 13 first round on Saturday. It will be the second meeting between the Wright County rivals in just over a week, as the Cowboys won 5-4 in nine innings on June 27.
C-G-D (9-17) won 8-0 at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura to conclude the regular season on Tuesday. Paxton Lingenfelter is batting .345 and Kolton Hefti has 17 RBIs to provide some pop in the Cowboys lineup. Head Coach Ryan Nail on tightly contested series with the Eagles.
“We also faced them last year in first round of postseason. These last two games we’ve had the opportunity to come out on top, but it hasn’t been easy. We need to go out. We need to execute. We need to throw strikes. We need to make plays. We need to knock the ball around a little bit and the results will take care of itself,” says Nail. “Anytime we play Eagle Grove, you know the kids are close with them. Jordan Miller, is a fantastic coach, a great friend of mine. Once first pitch is thrown, you know that rivalry kind of comes back and it’s gonna be a dog fight. I expect nothing less on Saturday.”
Jacob Ruba leads the staff with a 4.60 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 12 appearances for the Cowboys.
Eagle Grove (6-15) won 8-2 over North Iowa at home in their regular season finale on Wednesday. Syrus Willard has a team best .397 avg and nine RBIs.
The first pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. in Garner. The winner will advance to face #3 (2A) Van Meter on July 8.
