AGWSR summer teams each win playoff openers Monday

Both AGWSR summer sports teams won their playoff openers Monday. In a neutral site game at Wapsie Valley, the baseball team beat North Butler 4-2. At home, the softball team defeated Colo-Nesco 15-1 in four innings.

In the baseball game, Tristen Dennis had three of the team’s seven hits, including a double. Kingston Holman drove in two runs on one hit, and Clay Buseman pitched the complete game with four strikeouts and three walks. It has advanced the team to Tuesday’s 1A District 4 semifinal at Wapsie Valley, which will air on 104.9 KLMJ. Pregame coverage will start at 6:40, followed by the first pitch at 7:00. The winner will advance to Saturday’s district final against either St. Edmond or West Fork.

In a 1A Region 8 first round game, the Cougars scored 11 in the first inning for a commanding lead, then added four in the third and ended the game early via the run margin rule. Lila Holmgaard led offensively with two hits and three RBIs. Brylea Metzgar pitched the complete game with six strikeouts and six walks with no hits allowed. They’ve advanced to Wednesday’s regional quarterfinal against #11 (1A) Ankeny Christian, which will be hosted by North Polk. That game will air on 99 The Wave at 7:00.
