South Hardin wins two playoff games Monday

The South Hardin baseball team avenged a season-opening loss by defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 6-3 in Monday’s 2A District 14 first round game.

The Tigers had a big inning with four runs in the fourth and had single runs in the first and fifth. They held the Cadets to single tallies in the second, fifth and seventh innings. Having set a program season win number record and advanced out of the first round, Head Coach Nathan Weig hopes to maintain a business-like mentality throughout the postseason.

“South Hardin’s team win record was 12, which we set last year,” Weig says. “And we knew we wanted to take that over and do even better than that. And just really proud of them. The way this team’s come together this year, we have three outstanding junior captains. And we play as a team. They support each other nonstop. Nobody gets down on anybody. And as much as we’re proud about that, that’s behind us.”

The Tigers have advanced to Tuesday’s district semifinal against West Marshall, which will be played in New Hampton at 5:00.

The Tiger softball team earned a 6-0 road win over South Hamilton in a 2A Region 4 first round game. In a steady scoring output, they scored once each in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings, finishing the game with two in the seventh for good measure. Lucy Anderson led with three hits and three RBIs, including two home runs. Charlee Rosonke pitched the complete game with nine strikeouts and two walks. They’ve advanced to Wednesday’s regional quarterfinal at #4 (2A) Osage.
