Coming off a dominant win in the first round, the AGWSR softball team will try to knock off one of the top teams in Class 1A in Wednesday’s 1A Region 8 quarterfinal against #11 (1A) Ankeny Christian. It’ll be played at North Polk and will air on 99 The Wave.
The Cougars were strong offensively in Monday’s 15-1, four-inning win over Colo-Nesco, where they scored 11 in the first inning to pull away. Head Coach Brock Holmgaard says as the team advances in the playoffs, strong pitching becomes more critical.
“We’re going to have to pitch well,” Holmgaard says. “We can’t be giving up many free bases. We’ve got to pitch well. We’ve got to play clean defense. Just make sure we keep continuing to improve on doing those things. If we could score runs, we’ll be all right.”
Ankeny Christian has just two losses, and has won four straight to end the regular season, including 21-1 over Baxter in the finale. Two players bat over .600, including Kate Quick at .690, the third-best in Iowa and best in Class 1A.
Coverage will start at 6:40 p.m., followed by the first pitch at 7:00. The winner will advance to Friday’s regional semifinal against either BCLUW or GMG.
