The Grundy Center baseball team had no problems in Tuesday’s postseason opener, earning an 8-0 home win over Crestwood in a 2A District 6 semifinal.
With three runs in the first and five in the fifth, the Spartans led the entire game while scattering 12 hits. Pete Lebo led with three hits and five RBIs, including a home run. Brayden Davie, Judd Jirovsky and Ethan Meester each had two hits. Jirovsky was the starting pitcher, recording 10 strikeouts and no walks. They’ll host Saturday’s district final against North Fayette Valley, which upset Sumner-Fredericksburg 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Spartan softball team will begin the playoffs in a 2A Region 5 quarterfinal at Alburnett. It’ll be a rematch of the same round last year, where Grundy Center upset the #2-ranked team to bust the bracket. The Spartans have out-hit the Pirates by batting average, .339 to .269, and will look to continue that efficiency in postseason play. It’ll start at 7:00 p.m., and the winner will advance to Friday’s regional semifinal against either West Branch or #5 (2A) Durant.
