The #7 (2A) West Fork softball team soared in the first inning and never looked back in a 8-0 win in five innings over Alta-Aurelia in a Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal on Monday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.
Abby Schoning sparked the Warhawk bats with a solo home run to lead off a five run first inning. The Warhawks in the inning also scored on RBI singles by JoAnna Wallace, Aizley Winfrey and Evie Hitzhusen and a sacrifice fly by Libby Trewin. The Warhawks extended their lead in the fourth with an RBI single by Trewin, sacrifice fly by Preslee Dickman and a Warriors pass ball to go up 8-0. The Warhawks ended the game early by the run margin rule, with a three up three down fifth inning. Trewin retired all 15 Warrior batters she faced for a perfect game with six strikeouts. Warhawk Senior Libby Trewin on setting the tone in the circle and connection with catcher Abby Schoning.
“I always say do it for more than yourself. I’m not doing it for me, I’m doing it for everyone out there. We always talk about how we go all in, all out, no matter what, we’re doing it for each other. When I pitch good, everyone else is feeling it. I think that I set the tone for other players, and it really just starts the game off hot,” says Trewin. “We really clicked this year. We were unsure what was going to happen between a pitching and catching duo this season. I’m really glad how close me and Abby have gotten. It really shows, I can just nod my head and she already knows what pitch I’m going to throw. It’s just a good connection between us.”
Head Coach Sadie Winfrey on Libby’s perfect game and what the team needs to continue to bring to gameday.
“She continues to do a great job. Knowing that she has the defense behind her that’s going to help her out when needed, I’m sure is very humbling for her as well. Overall, they do a great job as a team to work together to get those outs,” says Winfrey. “I think the most important thing for us personally is our offense and keeping our bats hot. Tonight, everybody contributed in the line up. I also want them to have fun, especially the seniors, you know, enjoying these last moments, they’ve been a part of the team for quite a while now. Have fun, bat’s hot, just playing our best ball.”
West Fork (20-6) will host East Sac County in a regional semifinal on Friday. The game will air on 104.9 KLMJ.
