The Dike-New Hartford baseball team couldn’t hang onto a seventh inning lead, and fell 4-3 at Anamosa in Saturday’s 2A District 12 final, as aired on 99 The Wave.
In a game where the teams capitalized on each other’s errors, the Wolverines committed one too many. Of the seven total runs, only one was earned, which was by DNH. In the third inning, Gavin Garbracht drove in a run on a fielder’s choice for a 1-0 lead, only to be answered in the bottom of the inning when Anamosa scored from third on a passed ball. In the fifth, Gerbracht scurried home on a passed ball by Anamosa, and an infield error by the Blue Raiders in the sixth allowed another Wolverine run to score. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Anamosa’s Vince Diers was walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-2 DNH. Two pitches later, an error on the Wolverines allowed two runs to score, ending the game in Anamosa’s favor.
“Unfortunately, Anamosa is a good team to where they’re going to capitalize on mistakes, and they capitalized on the two mistakes that made in the seventh inning,” Head Coach Jordan Martin says. “Their number one guy was throwing pretty hard. They brought in the number two. He was throwing more off speed, so we just had to adjust. I feel like we saw a lot of pitches. We had some good at-bats and scratched a few runs off, but it would have been nice to a few more with a little bit insurance.”
DNH had three hits, including one each by Carson Costello, Colin Meester and Channing Cutsforth. Conner Dancer was the starting pitcher, and gave up three hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
DNH has closed its season at 21-5.
