Hampton Mayor Steve Birdsall announced last week that he will run for reelection in November.

“I really struggled with this over the last five months or so. And, you know, where am I at myself, health-wise? And I thought, you know, I think we’re getting there and then we’re doing okay. And we’ve seen some progress happening over the past three and a half years that I have been the mayor. And I thought, you know what, you know, if the people support me for another term, I just assume stick around and see if we can’t get some more things done.”

Birdsall was first appointed mayor in May of 2022 following the resignation of Russell Wood. Birdsall took some time away from his mayoral duties last year after suffering a stroke in April of 2024. Birdsall says his recovery is going well and is ready to serve another term.

“Overall, I’m doing well physically. I feel great. I did retire from my first job. As a result of that, we just keep working on it daily and moving forward.”

There will be five seats up for reelection on the Hampton City Council this year in addition to the mayor’s seat. The Ward I seat, currently held by Kristin Roode, will be up for election this fall along with the Ward II seat held by Barry Lamos, the Ward III seat held by Bill Holmstrom, the Ward IV seat held by Jerre Grefe and the at-large council seat held by Pat Palmer, who announced in June that he will not seek another term on the council.
