Warhawks shut out East Sac County to cruise into regional final

The #7 (2A) West Fork softball team used steady scoring to defeat East Sac County 8-0 in six innings in Saturday’s 2A Region 8 semifinal round.

In a balanced output, they scored twice each in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings while holding their opponent off the board. Libby Trewin delivered 14 strikeouts to set the tone defensively. It was also the team’s second consecutive shutout win.

It has advanced them to Monday’s Region 8 final, where they’ll host Top of Iowa-East opponent Central Springs with a state tournament appearance on the line. The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Pocahontas Area 6-5 in walk-off fashion in Friday’s semifinal, which was played as scheduled despite adverse weather conditions. In the regular season, West Fork won 6-1 and 4-1 when the teams met in conference play. Head Coach Sadie Winfrey says the keys to postseason success are simple; maintaining a strong offense and enjoying the moments.

“I think the most important thing for us personally is our offense and keeping our bats hot,” Winfrey says. “And I also want them to have fun, especially the seniors, enjoying these last moments of them as they’ve been a part of the team for quite a while now. Have fun, bats hot, and just playing our best ball.”

A win would advance the Warhawks to their second straight state tournament.
