Spartan Baseball looks to punch state tournament ticket Tuesday

The #9 (2A) Grundy Center baseball team is one win away from its first state tournament appearance since 2021. To get there, they’ll take on Cascade in Tuesday’s 2A Substate 3 Final at Vinton-Shellsburg, which will air on 99 The Wave.

The top seed and champion of 2A District 6, the Spartans advanced with Saturday’s 3-2 home win over North Fayette Valley in the district final. That night, a pitchers duel ensued for the final four innings after the Spartans scored two in the first and one in the third while giving up two to the TigerHawks in the second. They’ll look to ramp back up offensively after being held to four hits. However, they continued to play strong defense while the pitching staff struck out 10 batters and only issued one walk.

Cascade is the District 5 champion, and was the #4-seed in the district. They defeated West Branch 5-3 in the first round, beat top-seeded #8 (2A) Regina Catholic in the semifinal, and scored in the 13th inning to win 5-4 at Denver in an extra-inning marathon in Saturday’s district final.

Coverage will start at 6:40 p.m., followed by the first pitch at 7:00.
