The Iowa Insurance Division is encouraging Iowans on Medicare to be on the look out for a letter distributed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS.

The letter warns that they may be one of the 103-thousand Medicare beneficiaries nationwide that had a fake Medicare.gov account created with their personal information.

CMS identified suspicious activity, and worked to deactivate the affected accounts, access the scope of the issue, and mitigate the harm.

Fraudulent accounts were created between 2023-2025 and used Medicare numbers coverage start date, last name, birth date, and zip code.

CMS has been able to identify the fraudulent accounts and reports no criminal activity from those fake accounts has been identified to date.

State officials say that issues such as this makes it even more important to review statements of benefits.
