Some disease related issues being reported in the area corn crop

If our current weather conditions continue, it could cause disease issues in the corn planted in our area.

Angie Rieck-Hinz is an Extension Field Agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and tells RadioOnTheGo News that one disease in particular, Southern Rust, has arrived.

“Which seems to be here a little earlier than usual this year. Pretty sporadic to find, but it seems like it’s increasing in pressure. Last year we had some locations in Iowa where Southern Rust was yield limiting. So I’m going to remind people to be scouting for Southern Rust. Common Rust, we have Common Rust every year, but it’s generally not yield limiting, but they need to be scouting for Southern Rust and making those fungicide application decisions.”

Rieck-Hinz says the area soybean crop has been showing little in the way of disease pressures, but that could change as we move into August.
